1. Regional conference on non-ionizing radiation

Application of the Aarhus Convention in Serbia

Ivan Karić, Member of Parliament and President of the Greens of Serbia, Vice-President of the Environmental Protection Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia

Abstract:

The Aarhus Convention guarantees citizens the right to be timely informed about information concerning the state of the environment and human health. It also regulates the right of citizens to participate in environmental decision-making, as well as the provision of legal protection when their right to participate is denied. Sources of non-ionizing radiation "emerge" more and more often in our environment: numerous telecommunication systems and transmission lines are being built, without previous open public discussions and without any participation of citizens in decision-making. The public has no information about the sources, impact or consequences of non-ionizing radiation. When the process comes to an end or when it is finished, citizens receive information, but then it is difficult to change anything and influence the decision-makers
