Scientists from 39 countries of the world compiled 2,000 documents on the health and biological effects of non-ionizing radiation, an integral part of the spectrum of the electromagnetic field. As many as 190 scientists signed an international appeal addressed to the UN Environmental Program.
In a letter addressed to the competent institutions, they state that devices such as mobile phones increase the risk of cancer, genetic damage, changes in the reproductive system, as well as a decrease in the ability to learn and remember.
Dr. Martin Blank
"Untwisted, they destroy living cells in our body and kill many of us prematurely," says Dr. Martin Blank of Columbia University's Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics.
"We have created something that harms us and is out of control. Before Edison invented the light bulb, there was very little electromagnetic radiation in our environment. Today's level is many times higher than natural and is increasing rapidly because of all the new devices that emit radiation," he claims.
Due to the widespread use of mobile phones, the number of brain cancer cases in young people has increased by more than three times. Scientists point to the fact that the uncontrolled use of radio-frequency radiation in mobile phones and wireless Internet leads to a public health crisis. Blank points out that the commissions that establish safety standards are deaf to the warnings of biologists and scientists and ignore biological facts.
"We are truly part of a large biological experiment without our consent. To protect ourselves, our children and the ecological system, we must reduce our exposure to radiation by introducing additional protective regulations," he says.
Scientists asked the UN Environment Program (UNEP) to "appoint and fund an independent multidisciplinary commission to examine the reasons 'for' and 'against' alternatives to current practice that would significantly reduce human exposure to radio-frequency and extremely low-frequency radiation".
