In May of this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that long-term use of mobile phones can cause cancer. These are the best ways to protect yourself from the radiation emitted by your cell phone.
The decision to issue this warning came after years of research and numerous studies that were reviewed and found to be inconclusive. Now more and more reports are appearing showing that there is another side effect of long-term cell phone use - infertility in men.
Recent research conducted at Queen's University in Canada found that cell phone use is associated with increased testosterone levels in users. Using a mobile can lead to "low sperm quality and reduced fertility". Other similar studies have found that sperm count in men who frequently use mobile phones can drop by as much as 30 percent.
Here's what to do to minimize radiation:
- Limit mobile usage for more important calls.
- Whenever possible, use the speakerphone instead of holding the phone to your ear. If you are in a quiet, private place, feel free to put the phone on an object and talk that way.
- Wait for the connection to be established, then put the phone to your ear. This is important because the mobile phone uses a lot more energy when making a call to get a good signal from a nearby base station.
- Carry your cell phone in your bag instead of your pants or shirt pocket (because of breast cancer).
- Make sure you have a good signal before making a call. When the signal indicates a bad connection, your mobile actively adjusts its transmit power to establish a more stable connection.
- Choose a cell phone with a low "Specific Absorption Rate" (SAR) which is a measure of the degree to which radio waves are absorbed by body tissue.
- Send text messages (SMS, email, chat...) whenever you can instead of calling. That way you will save both time and money.
- Instead of a mobile phone, let an alarm clock wake you up in the morning.
- Connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible. When you send a data request over Wi-Fi instead of base stations, it will take less time for the phone to establish a connection to receive your emails and other data.
