General terms about radiation

Radiation in the environment: Terrestrial, extraterrestrial and electromagnetic fields

In physics, radiation refers to the transfer of energy through space. The entire human organism constantly resides and moves in an environment filled with different types of radiation and fields, which can be of terrestrial or extraterrestrial origin.

Basic types of radiation and their sources

The physical definition divides radiation into two basic categories: electromagnetic wave radiation and corpuscular radiation (where a corpuscle means an extremely small particle). From the human point of view, the sources of these influences are divided into two large groups:

1. Terrestrial radiation (of terrestrial origin)

This group includes atmospheric radiation that manifests itself through air pressure, temperature, the presence of water in all aggregate states, storm processes in the ionosphere, gases released from the earth's bowels, as well as the Earth's natural magnetic and electric field.

2. Extraterrestrial radiation (of extraterrestrial origin)

They include cosmic radiation, solar storms, X-ray and ultraviolet radiation, sunlight, infrared radiation, as well as low and high frequency radiation from space.

Electric and magnetic fields in the environment

Electric field represents a state in space caused by the presence of a charged electrical conductor or apparatus. On the other hand, magnetic field it arises as a result of the rapid change of currents and changing fields, where at every point in space it has a precisely determined strength and direction.

The modern use of electricity creates two types of artificial fields that we encounter every day:

  • Electrostatic field: It is closely related to man-made materials in our environment, such as synthetic furniture, carpets, curtains and wardrobes. Most of these materials are easily charged with static electricity, creating a field around them that can affect the environment.
  • Electromagnetic field: It occurs when an electric current flows through a conductor. Almost all household appliances, workplace devices, televisions, radios and other machines are wired to the electrical grid and generate these fields. Experience shows that many people are extremely sensitive to the presence of electromagnetic fields in their living and working space.
